Despite the Agency’s profound effort to stop stock outs and ensure the sustained availability of pharmaceuticals in the country, there is still a notable gap between demand and supply in pharmaceuticals. The BPR conducted recently identified the absence of a clearly defined list of pharmaceuticals imported by the Agency as one of the main reasons for interruptions in supply. Instead of trying to supply all kinds of pharmaceuticals as per requests by health facilities, therefore, the Agency has resorted to focus on a list of clearly identified pharmaceuticals. The list is believed to have brought focus to procurement and supply activities, a tangible reference against which its performance can be gauged and avoid unwarranted criticisms when a specific kind of pharmaceutical becomes unavailable on the market.
